Following the tragic deaths of Duke Borric, Prince Erland, and King Rodric IV during the Riftwar, Lyam becomes King of the Isles. The matter of succession was unsure due to the revelation that Martin Longbow was actually Duke Borric's eldest son, but when Martin renounced his claim to the throne, Lyam was crowned. Lyam serves primarily as a background figure in the ''Riftwar'' novels. His brother Arutha, whom Lyam names Prince of Krondor following his coronation, serves a much larger role as a primary figure in later novels.
