The Kingdom of the Isles (also known as the Kingdom of Rillanon, and usually shortened to 'the Kingdom') is one of the most powerful nations in the northern half of the continent of Triagia. The mainland territory of the Kingdom stretches from the shores of the Endless Sea and the Bitter Sea in the west to the Kingdom Sea (Sea of Kingdoms) in the east. Its northern reaches are bounded by the Teeth of the World and the Northern Guardians, beyond which lie the Northlands. To the south, it shares a border with the Empire of Great Kesh. Culturally and politically, the Kingdom is divided in half between the older and more populous Eastern Realm and the Western Realm, which is governed from Krondor.

History[]

Early Expansion[]

In ancient times, some 750 years prior to the Riftwar, the island of Rillanon was united under the rule of the first conDoin king, a tribal leader named Dannis conDoin. Under the conDoin kings, the kingdom's influence grew, as it engulfed its neighboring island kingdoms. During the following two centuries, Rillanon and the rival city-state of Bas-Tyra fought trade wars for control over the Sea of Kingdoms. The conDoins progressively expanded the Kingdom of the Isles through a series of wars, conquests, and annexations. Two hundred years after Dannis, Delong (the only King to be known as 'the Great') planted the banner of Rillanon on the mainland by conquering Bas-Tyra.

Growth of the Western Realm[]

Several centuries later, conflict between the Empire of Great Kesh and its subsidiary, the Keshian Confederation, led to the withdrawal of Keshian troops from its northernmost territories. Nicholas conDoin, youngest son of the King, brought the Kingdom armies westward to the Keshian province of Bosania and expanded the Western Realm.

The Rift War[]

The Riftwar was an incursion into our world by the nation known as the Empire of Tsuranuannni, during the reign of King Rodric IV. The Tsurani reached Midkemia via a "Rift" also known as a dimensional portal or gateway allowing instantaneous travel over vast distances.

The Serpent War[]

There resided a race on Midkemia a race of serpent brings called the Pantathians. During the early days of the reign of King Borric, these serpent priests again arose to plague the Kingdom and take the Lifestone at Sethanon.

The Dark War[]

A rift through dimensions allowed the Dasati to attempt to invade Midkemia by invading Kelewan. It ended in the mass destruction of Kelewan in order to save the World of Midkemia.

The Demon War[]

The Demon war was a conflict between rival demon kings which spilled into Midkemia which forced Pug and the Conclave of Shadows to intervene> it was here that the final understanding occluded that every event from before the Rift War was but single conflict in the ongoing struggle between two unimaginable and primal forces.

The Chaos War[]

The Chaos War was thought to be struggle between the Blind Gods of the Beginning and those who occupied Midkemia. Pug sacrificed for every living being on Midkemia.

Currency and Trade[]

The Kingdom operates on a monetary system centered around the prestigious golden sovereign, which serves as the primary currency. For transactions of smaller value, silver royals and coppers are commonly used as denominations.

However, when it comes to large-scale financial dealings involving significant sums, a system of counting houses acts as intermediaries. Merchants engage in transactions using letters of credit issued by these establishments. These letters of credit grant them the ability to withdraw the designated amount from their personal accounts, facilitating secure and efficient trade in the thousands of sovereigns.

In addition to traditional currency, an alternative form of wealth comes in the form of gemstones. These precious gems carry substantial value relative to their weight, making them a sought-after medium of exchange. Following the advent of the first Riftwar, the popularity of gemstone trading soared, thanks to the abundance of these precious stones sourced from Kelewan.

When engaging in foreign trade, the challenge of reconciling the value of coins from different nations arises. This issue is resolved through the use of touchstones—a method that involves comparing and weighing coins against a standardized touchstone to ascertain their relative worth accurately.

Thus, the Kingdom's financial landscape thrives with the golden sovereign as its cornerstone, complemented by the use of silver royals, coppers, gemstones, and practical techniques such as counting houses and touchstones to facilitate smooth and reliable transactions across various scales and international boundaries.

Military and Navy[]

The military forces of the Kingdom were structured into two distinct entities: the Armies of the East and the Armies of the West. These forces were under the command of their respective rulers, who held the esteemed rank of Knight-General during times of war.

The Armies of the East were led by the King himself, who served as their commanding officer. Assisting the King in this role was the Duke of Rillanon, who held the position of the second-in-command within the Armies of the East.

On the other hand, the Armies of the West were mustered by the Prince of Krondor, who held a dual role as both the ruler of Krondor and the King's Knight Marshal. The Prince of Krondor held the unique privilege of being the only ruler, aside from the King, with the authority to gather the Knight-Generals under his banner.

In addition to the land forces, the Krondorian fleet, a powerful naval force, was under the command of a distinguished leader known as the Lord-Admiral. This naval commander held the responsibility of overseeing the operations and strategic maneuvers of the Krondorian fleet.

This division of military authority and command structure ensured a balanced and efficient defense of the Kingdom's territories, with the King, Duke of Rillanon, Prince of Krondor, and Lord-Admiral playing crucial roles in leading and coordinating the armed forces, both on land and at sea.
